Letter From our Future Pastor

Dear Church of the Outer Banks,
I am excited to officially call myself the new pastor of Church of the Outer Banks! My name is Joey Fitzgerald, and I am married to an incredible woman, Brandie. We have four kids, Sam (14), Jack (11), Luke (8), and Lila (10 mo.) For the past 4 years I have served as the Director of Family Ministries at Truro Anglican Church in Fairfax, VA.
When Brandie and I were first married, we adopted a dog from the local animal shelter. We named her Lucy, after the character in CS Lewis’ book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.  She was just a mutt, but I thought she was absolutely beautiful. If I were to guess, I would say she was a mix of a Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, and maybe something a little smaller, like a Border Collie. Whatever the breeds were, she seemed to carry the best of their qualities: loyal, energetic, playful, watchful, and protective. If you’ve ever owned a mutt, you probably know what I mean.
I’m a bit of a mutt myself, at least when it comes to my background as a follower of Jesus. I was raised in a Roman Catholic Church, albeit, a very charismatic one. In high school, I encountered Christ in a life changing way through an evangelical organization called Young Life. As newlyweds, Brandie and I went to a non-denominational church that met in an elementary school cafeteria. I’ve also attended (and sometimes worked for) Methodist churches, an Episcopal church, and the Anglican Church. Along the way, I have had powerful encounters with God in Baptist churches, Presbyterian churches, and various charismatic churches. I can say, beyond doubt, that our Father is at work through any church that glorifies His Son, and He fills those churches with the joy and peace of the Holy Spirit, no matter what their denominational claim is!
A few weeks ago, when my family had a chance to worship with you, I felt the powerful presence of God’s Spirit, right in the middle of a YMCA! I watched the church as my sons engaged in worship, as people warmly greeted Brandie, as folks loved on my baby daughter… and I could sense that God had an amazing plan for this community. I can’t wait to move down here, to work alongside each of you, serving as your pastor. I have a feeling that we are on the cusp of a mighty work of God, and I want to be a part of it!
Brandie, Sam, Jack, Luke, Lila, and I will move during the 3rd week of June. Our first official Sunday will be June 21st, but I will join you a handful of times between now and then, as I come down to preach, to house hunt, and to get to know the community a little better. If you have questions or just want to drop me a quick email, I would love to hear from you: fr.fitz@yahoo.com. You are all in my prayers, and I know that God is pouring His blessings on you at this very moment.
Peace of Christ,
Joey Fitzgerald+
