Church of the Outer Banks began with a vision for a new kind of church. After serving as a pastor in Tennessee for three
years, Winfield Bevins and his wife Kay felt the call of God to plant a church where anyone could come regardless of his or her
background; a church that is low on religion but big on relationships; and a place where people could find and use their
spiritual gifts. Around that same time, some close friends began telling them about the need for a contemporary cutting edge
church in the Outer Banks. After much prayer, they resigned their church in Tennessee and made plans to move to the Outer Banks,
NC. With only faith, and a few possessions they moved in May 2005.
Church of the Outer Banks began meeting in a home with only five people in June 2005. After a few short months, they quickly
outgrew the home meeting space and began looking for a new place to meet. After looking at several locations the Lord opened a
door for the church to meet at the YMCA in Nags Head. October 2nd 2005 was the first service in the YMCA. The move allowed the
church to expand their ministries to include a nursery, children's church, Coffee Bar, and worship team.
The church celebrated their 2-year anniversary on October 1st 2007. God has done so much in so little time. It is incredible
to see the people that God is sending from across the Outer Banks to build a great church that is making a difference in our
community one life at a time!
To develop 21st century followers of Jesus Christ who will make a difference in the Outer Banks by connecting with God, connecting with others, and connecting with serving our world.
What core values guide us as a church?
- Connect with God
We believe the single most important thing is for people to have a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ.
Everything that we do as a church is for this purpose.
- Connect with Others
We believe that loving relationships should permeate every aspect of church life. We desire to be a community of believers who
love God and care for one another through real relationships by meeting monthly in fellowship groups.
- Connect with Serving Our World
God's love inspires us to reach out and help our neighbors in our community and around the world. We provide ways for people to
serve within our church as well as outside of the church in the community.
Church of the Outer Banks is actively involved with Acts 29, a network of churches from around the nation whose goal is to help plant new churches and replant declining churches. We believe the local church is the hope of the world. We are committed to collaborating with Acts 29 to plant healthy churches in North Carolina, the Southeast, and beyond. Please visit the Acts 29 website for more information.
